The South Coast is renowned for its bustling day tourism, and has a plethora of activities on offer. From a family day at Riverbend Crocodile Farm, to an adventure hike with a group of friends, there is something for everyone.

Butterfly Valley

Butterfly Valley is a great place to visit to appreciate what insect life is found along the South Coast. What makes butterfly valley special is that they breed most of their butterflies rather than importing them, which allows them to showcase the entire life cycle of these amazing insects. Their gift shop is full of trinkets to take home as mementos of your trip.

Cycle the South Coast

The Red Desert in Port Edward is a natural phenomenon, whose existence is shrouded in mystery. This 200 metre stretch of desert stands apart from the lush, sub-tropical flora found throughout the South Coast making for unique terrain. Cycling trails run through this alluring wilderness, offering a distinct adventure that can’t be found anywhere else.

The Mtamvuna river is situated on the border of Kwa-Zulu Natal and the Eastern Cape. Its luscious green landscape offers an attractive cycling route. The trails are color coded according to level of intensity and experience. There are beginner routes which are ideal for family outings. Most of the other trails cater to mountain biking which provides a greater challenge for more experienced cyclists. These trails run past Beaver Creek Coffee Estate, a great refueling spot with its own breathtaking scenery.

Adventure Hikes

A three to four day guided hike named the “Wild-South Coast Walk” is the perfect way to experience the natural settings of the South Coast.

Zulu and Mpondo villages allow visitors to be immersed in different aspects of South African culture.

With three river gorges to explore, and beaches lined with million-year-old fossil beds, the Wild-South Coast walk is the ultimate experience for any hiker.

The Mpenjati Nature Reserve has various trails to traverse, catering to beginners and experienced hikers. The longest trail is 9 kilometers which is approximately a four hour casual walk, which  leads to the Mbizana river located in Southbroom. Beach and river trails teaming with animal life add to these fascinating trails. Sand dunes found in the nature reserve encapsulate some of the most delicate ecosystems on the South Coast.

Mac Banana Farm

The Mac Banana Farm on the South Coast is known for rescuing animals like ponies, donkeys, pigs, emus, rabbits, and so many more to enjoy. After showing these beautiful rescues some love, check out the butterfly dome and a mini-golf course for all ages to enjoy. Get some pancakes to satisfy your sweet tooth before you leave!

Riverbend Crocodile Farm

If you have a love for reptiles, Riverbend Crocodile Farm is the place for you. This park is home to a variety of different species of reptiles like Crocodiles, snakes and lizards. Riverbend Crocodile Farm also has an animal farm for all to enjoy. Some of these crocodiles are up to 100 years old, with their hatchlings being the size of your palm!
