Conservation and the protection of our beautiful wildlife and plant life is paramount for many conservation efforts down the KZN South Coast. There is a host of nature reserves and game parks linked with conservation efforts in the area that aim to protect grasslands, wetlands, rivers, and estuaries, as well as the vast coastline. You’ll even find the world’s smallest desert!
If you’re looking for a more active connection with nature, the Bush Buck Trail in Southbroom is a self-guided trail that meanders through dense coastal vegetation. Walk, jog, or run this beautiful trail, which is home to abundant birdlife. There is a resident crowned eagle, as well as a shy bushbuck family. Blue duikers are often sighted along the trail as well!
Moving away from the coast, Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve is a fantastic day trip or even weekend away. The gorge itself, carved out by the Umzimkulwana River, provides a picturesque backdrop. If you’re looking for something with more adrenaline, the reserve is home to a variety of activities, including hiking, mountain biking, abseiling, the gorge swing, and much more! With over 250 species of birds, it’s a birdwatchers paradise, and some visitors and locals have claimed to have spotted leopard!
The Red Desert Nature Reserve is known as the world’s smallest desert. At 200m in diameter, it consists of 2 Berea formations red sand exposures. Stone artifacts from the Sangoan Industry are still being discovered, and include picks, rough hand axes, choppers, flakes, and cores. While the area may be arid, there are still beautiful and unique plants that make their home there, including 3 types of Protea, South Africa’s national flower.
Many of the reserves and parks have ample space to wander in and take in the majestic beauty of plants and wildlife. There are picnic spots and walking trails to give you a fun-filled day out with the whole family! Make sure to check out the TC Robertson Nature Reserve, The Vernon Crookes Nature Reserve, and the Umtamvuna Nature Reserve!
