What winter? Wild Coast Sun where the weather is mild and the fun never sets

Indoors or out, visitors are spoiled for choice

The Wild Coast stretches from East London in the south to the border of KwaZulu-Natal in the north. It is the traditional home of the Xhosa, Thembu, and Mpondo people, and the birthplace of many prominent South Africans, including Nelson Mandela, Winnie Mandela, and Thabo Mbeki.

The region is known for its mild winter climate, with temperatures hovering around 21-23°C in July and minimal rainfall, which makes it the perfect time to book a holiday at the Wild Coast Sun. Not only will guests be able to enjoy multiple indoor activities at the resort but the pleasant weather lends itself to a host of outdoor pursuits in the area.

While the popular summer water adventures like kayaking, paddle boating, water skiing, and tube rides might be a bit challenging for only the bravest, a leisurely beach walk along the pristine coastline is unbeatable, especially since guests in see-facing rooms can step right onto the beach to take the fresh breeze and salt air.

That said, the mid-year school holidays see a week-long SunFest Inflatable Park extravaganza that transforms Wild Coast Sun into a thrilling playground packed with giant inflatable obstacle courses, slides, bouncers, tunnels, and more. Perfect for children, teens, and even the young at heart, it’s non-stop action and excitement in the open air.

If walking on the beach is a bit tame, supervised horse rides can be arranged, suitable for children and adults.

Other outdoor pastimes include a few rounds on the 18-hole championship golf course with an unrivalled view, tennis and lawn bowls on the green (and 10-pin inside). Consistently rated in the top 10 courses in South Africa, it was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr to embrace the landscape, and forms part of the South African PGA circuit with a par 70 card rating. With wide fairways, huge greens, many bunkers, ravines, water hazards and a shot over a waterfall, combined with coastal winds, players will be challenged every hole.

As for lawn bowls, it’s not just for mature players anymore; is a leisurely activity that anyone can play regardless of age or ability. It is easy to learn and can be as relaxed or as competitive as you want to make it.

Because of the reduced likelihood of strong winds and heavy rain (Cape Town, we’re looking at you), quad biking and Segway tours are also on the table. Exploring the 750 hectares of lush indigenous bush that surround the resort on a quad bike is a must.

Whether you have ridden a quad bike before or have zero experience, the tours cater for the proficient as well as beginners. There are three tour options, each with their own picturesque scenery and many photography opportunities for social media or mounted to your wall at home.

From four wheels to two, trundle along beautiful scenic routes on a Segway: opt for the botanic forest tour that takes you to the banks of Mtamvuna River, or the golf tour that takes you around the golf course, with beautiful greenery and spectacular sea views of the Indian Ocean. Segway tours are something the whole family to do together – all you need is a little co-ordination and practice, and you will be on your way. An experienced guide is on hand to provide a lesson to build your confidence.

Before we head off to explore inside the resort, here are a few more outside ideas:

  • The warm weather and fertile land make the Wild Coast a prime farming destination. Many of the lower South Coast farms invite visitors for fun excursions and tastings, which make great family edutainment days out (educational and entertaining).
  • If there is a coastline, there are shipwrecks. Several lie under the ocean’s surface, to be explored by divers, but on the Port Edward beach, you can view the Sao Joao Portuguese Monument, erected on North Sand Bluff to commemorate the souls lost in 1552 when the Portuguese ship sank in the shallow waters off Port Edward.
  • An oblivious person walking along the beach will be completely unaware of what lies below their feet so enlist a tour guide to show you the history and sights from the Cretaceous period and volcanic remains of 80-million-year-old fossilised trees and deposits on the rocks, in the Petrified Forest.

Of course, the casino is a big attraction at Wild Coast Sun, strictly for adults but hours of entertainment are guaranteed. A variety of table games and slot machines are tailored to appeal to your preference. The slot machines are operated by secure and efficient smart card technology. Both slots and tables have smoking and non-smoking facilities.

Treat yourself to a day at the Mangwanani Spa where the best African-inspired therapies and treatments combine to leave you feeling rejuvenated and refreshed. Make your booking before or after a shopping spree. Explore the farm stalls, markets and stores dotted around Port Edward and the surrounds, or purchase gifts, souvenirs, bathing suits or clothes at the boutiques and gift shops at Wild Coast Sun. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, head for one of the many on-site restaurants and bars. Grab a quick bite to eat at one of the fast food stores or indulge in a meal with an Indian Ocean backdrop at the various sit-down restaurants, suited to cater for every taste and occasion.

Visiting Wild Coast Sun during winter offers a unique blend of mild weather, exciting activities, and family-friendly entertainment, making it an ideal getaway.
