Underrated South Coast should be on your bucket list!
Underrated – South Coast should be on your bucket list!
Clinton Dean
The KwaZulu-Natal South Coast is one of the most underrated destinations in South Africa. It’s a place where I escape when I need a little recharge. And with its blue flag beaches, adventure, culture, Instagram worthy spots and not to mention it’s tantalising cuisine, it’s the perfect getaway for yourself, family, friends and for bae. I try to leave home early whenever I travel to the South Coast or check-in a day early, because I love watching the sunrise at one of the beaches.

Starting the day before sunrise allows ample time to explore to your heart’s content. As an avid traveller to the South Coast, I have always managed to find something unusual and exciting to do, whether it’s a visit to the Red Desert, known as being one of the smallest deserts in the world, or sampling the best waffles in KZN at The Waffle House in Ramsgate. An ideal day for adventure lovers, would be an early morning Ocean Safari where you get to see whales, dolphins and fly fish. It’s not for the faint-hearted, but a must-see place if you want to do something out of your comfort zone.
If you have kids or are a kid at heart, Riverbend Crocodile Farm is perfect for a weekend activity. Learn about the crocodiles or explore the stunning art on display at the art gallery. Wine tastings can be arranged a day in advance.
There’s also Lake Eland Game Reserve that boasts over 2 500 hectares of lush views. There’s plenty to keep everyone entertained. While I tend to do day visits, travellers should spend at least 3 days on the South Coast. There’s plenty to add to your bucket list, and you want to add a full day to spend at the beach. If you visit between the winter season, you may get to be part of the famous Sardine Run.
