The origins of the Port Shepstone Country Club (PSCC) date back to 1912 when a modest 9-hole golf course was established between the Dutch Reformed Church and Port Shepstone High School. However, it wasn’t until 1918 that the club began to take its present shape when the Lower Umzimkulu Lawn Tennis Club moved to the current site, repurposing the existing pavilion to house their equipment.

In 1928, Neil McKenzie, the inaugural club president, along with members and workers, designed a new 9-hole golf course at this location. Remarkably, an elephant tooth fossil was uncovered during construction. The clubhouse was subsequently erected, inspired by a design Mrs McKenzie had admired in Ladysmith.

To honour Neil McKenzie’s contributions, the McKenzie Trophy competition was established. Throughout World War 2, the clubhouse played a unique role, housing parts of an aircraft that crashed on the nearby beach. Intriguingly, the injured pilot later wed a local nurse.

In 1948, to reflect its multi-sport nature, the club adopted its present name. Tragedy struck in 1959 when floods ravaged the club. Undeterred, members rallied to raise funds and rebuild, establishing a competition in recognition of this restoration.
