KZN South Coast embraces the rise of slow travel through authentic local experiences
The KZN South Coast is responding to the global shift towards more meaningful and mindful travel by promoting “slow travel” a growing trend that encourages visitors to explore local culture, nature and community driven experiences at a relaxed pace.
Rather than rushing through packed itineraries, slow travel invites travellers to immerse themselves in the destination’s lifestyle, people and environment. On the KZN South Coast, this is reflected through authentic homestays, farm visits, cultural tours, scenic hiking routes, river trails and locally guided adventures that allow visitors to connect with communities while supporting local economies.
A key highlight is the Great Drives Out initiative, linking the coastline to scenic hinterland routes and immersive rural experiences. Standout offerings include the KwaXolo Caves Adventure, showcasing ancient San rock art and dramatic landscapes and the KwaNdwalane and Nyandezulu Experiences, featuring guided hikes, traditional cuisine and village stay. Travellers can explore Oribi Gorge and surrounding rural communities for nature-based adventure and artisan encounters, while the Mission Tourism Route in Umzumbe and the Emalangeni Experience combine heritage, local cuisine and relaxed scenic drives.
Adding to the region’s slow travel appeal is the Umzumbe River Trail, a multi-day hiking experience that takes visitors through picturesque rural landscapes and vibrant communities. Along the route, guests are welcomed into authentic homestays where they enjoy traditional meals, storytelling and cultural exchange, creating meaningful connections while directly supporting local families and small tourism enterprises.
These experiences encourage longer stays, reduced travel footprints and increased support for community-based tourism. Dr Sibiya, CEO of South Coast Tourism and Investment Enterprise (SCTIE), said: “The KZN South Coast is perfectly positioned to embrace the slow travel trend through our strong community tourism offerings, diverse landscapes and rich cultural heritage. By encouraging travellers to explore beyond traditional routes, we are promoting sustainability, supporting local businesses and driving inclusive economic growth.”
As travellers increasingly seek authentic and purposeful journeys, the KZN South Coast remains committed to developing tourism experiences that connect visitors with its people, culture and natural beauty.
