South Coast audiences have returned to the theatre with enthusiasm since Wild Cost Sun Resort reopened its upgraded Tropical Nites Theatre almost a year ago, at a cost of R1,5-million.
The Sun International resort welcomes a mix of leisure, gaming, family and business tourists and the mix of shows has been aimed at meeting the needs of visitors as well as locals residing in Bizana, Port Shepstone, Margate and surrounds. The revamped theatre, with state-of-the-art sound and lighting to enhance its technical aspects, has reupholstered seats, and refreshed changing rooms.
“Our first show was comedian Carvin Goldstone which was very well-received, so we have continued to look out for top class shows in this genre,” said Wild Coast Sun General Manager Peter Tshidi.
In July, South African duo Brendon Peel and Li Lau bought their Extreme Magic Show, spell bounding audiences with their daring feats and illusions, and in September, well-known comedy duo Jason and Nicholas Goliath make a stop as part of their Happiness Economy Comedy Tour which explores the hilarities of daily life, relationships and their quest for joy. This show is not suitable for those under the age of 16.
“Over the past 12 months, we have proudly hosted a range of successful performances, from musical extravaganzas to captivating dramas. Our theatre continues to be the hub for exceptional live entertainment, drawing audiences from nearby towns and as far as Durban. Getting people back into the theatre has taken time but it is starting to become a regular pastime for locals as the calibre of shows has been carefully thought-out to appeal to them, such as comedian Sifiso Nene which was completely sold out. We are also investigating more Bollywood-type shows for our Durban guests to enjoy.”
While it has been laughs aplenty, there have also been several dance productions both by local schools and dance schools, for which Wild Coast Sun assists with specially-negotiated rates for the community. “Tropical Nites has also been used as a conference and awards venue by corporates, proving its usefulness across a wide variety of events,” Tshidi said.
Audiences are aged 18 to 65 depending on the show, with children’s shows over the holiday periods. “We are a family destination and try to ensure the shows are family-orientated when we know we need to keep our youngest guests busy.”
“It is important that we keep pushing the envelope to bring notable artists and shows to Wild Coast Sun, so that Tropical Nites adds to our diverse mix of entertainment offerings,” Tshidi said.
Wild Coast Sun has introduced “Show and Stay” packages for the Goliath comedy show, on September 29, which will start from R1 545 per couple including a night’s accommodation, breakfast, and tickets to watch the show.
