In the spotlight: Port Shepstone

Within the lush Kwazulu-Natal province, sits a bustling town situated on the Mzimkhulu River Mouth named Port Shepstone. The town got its iconic name from Sir Theophilus Shepstone who was in government during the 1800s and transformed the town into what we know it as now: The business hub of the KZN South Coast.

William Bazley is the man behind the town’s harbour’s construction in 1880, which opened the town up to the outside world and gave it a brighter purpose.

The town began flourishing when marble was discovered near the river mouth not long before 1879. The town became a port, where agricultural workers could receive the goods they needed from Durban in order to grow the town’s diversity and attract more travellers.
