Women and Youth Entrepreneurs Shaping the Future of Tourism on the KZN South Coast
Women and youth entrepreneurs are playing an increasingly important role in shaping the future of tourism on the KZN South Coast, bringing innovation, authentic storytelling and community-driven experiences that strengthen the region’s appeal while driving inclusive economic growth.
Supported through various initiatives and marketing platforms by South Coast Tourism and Investment Enterprise (SCTIE), emerging entrepreneurs are transforming traditional sectors such as agriculture, culture and local cuisine into vibrant tourism experiences. Agri-tourism has become a powerful tool for diversification, allowing visitors to explore working farms while learning about local produce, sustainable practices and rural lifestyles.
Across the destination, visitors can enjoy immersive farming experiences at Ubumbano Homestead in Amandawe, Mushroom farming in KwaNositha and at BBBS Farm exotic tomato and macadamia farming which is located in Southport. These offerings provide travellers with authentic farm-to-table insights while creating additional income streams for local producers, women-led enterprises and youth-owned small businesses.
Beyond agriculture, entrepreneurs are leading guided hikes, cultural tours, township culinary experiences and craft initiatives that showcase the rich heritage and creativity of South Coast communities. These enterprises not only enhance the visitor experience but also create employment opportunities and encourage skills development among young people across rural and township areas.
By supporting emerging tourism businesses, SCTIE is helping ensure that the benefits of tourism are shared across communities. Marketing exposure, stakeholder partnerships and capacity-building programmes are enabling entrepreneurs to grow sustainable businesses that contribute meaningfully to the local economy.
Dr Sibiya, CEO of South Coast Tourism and Investment Enterprise (SCTIE), said: “Women and youth entrepreneurs are vital to the growth and transformation of tourism on the KZN South Coast. Through agri-tourism and community-based experiences, they are creating authentic products that attract visitors while empowering communities and building a more inclusive and resilient tourism economy.”
As tourism continues to evolve, the KZN South Coast remains committed to supporting innovative entrepreneurs driving positive change and long-term economic sustainability.
