The KZN South Coast boasts the most permanently managed 2023/2024 Blue Flag beaches in Africa.
There were 7 pilot beaches, namely Pennington Beach, Rocky Bay Beach, Preston Beach, Umthwalume Beach, Scottburgh Beach, St Michaels Beach and Ramsgate Beach.
The 5 Blue Flag beaches, which are awarded annually, are Marina Beach, Trafalgar Beach, Southport Beach, Umzumbe Beach and Hibberdene Beach..
Blue Flag is an international eco-label that is awarded to world-class beaches for their standard of excellence in safety, water quality, environmental education and management standards. In South Africa the programme is managed by WESSA in partnership with local municipalities.
Giving travellers peace of mind that they are doing their best by supporting the environment, Blue Flag beaches also make sure the following is featured at each accredited beach: information board and facilities map; lifeguards and first aid; safety and emergency plans; bathing water quality and drinking water; accessibility; displayed beach laws; beach management and maintenance; cleanliness; ablutions and waste management; environmental education and management.
All 5 of the KZN South Coast’s Blue Flag beaches offer lifeguards all year round as well as shark nets for beach goers’ peace of mind.
