The 10 best date ideas to spoil that special someone on the KZN South Coast

With its incredible natural landscape, quality eateries and exquisite views, the KZN South Coast is the perfect place to plan a memorable date. And for those romantics looking to spoil their significant other with a something incredibly unique, there are a number of top date spots available in the Paradise of the Zulu Kingdom.

“Whether you’re looking for a really memorable location to take a first date, or simply want to show your partner how much you care, then the KZN South Coast is the place to visit!” said Phelisa Mangcu, CEO of Ugu South Coast Tourism (USCT). “We have the most incredible sites for a laidback occasion, as well as outdoor activities for the more adventurous couples. There’s really something for everyone.”

1.      Picnic Spots

What’s more romantic than enjoying a delicious picnic in a beautiful setting with a loved one? The KZN South Coast is home to 10 nature reserves which have delightful picnic spots along river banks, near waterfalls, beneath the canopy of indigenous trees. The Botanical Garden at Ramsgate’s Bellevue Guest Lodge and Eco Park is also the perfect picnic dating spot, with some 200 species of indigenous trees, overlooking the Imbezane River. There’s also beautiful accommodation for those wanting to extend their stay.

2.      Helicopters, Light Aircraft and Microlight Flips

For couples who enjoy a bit of adventure, take in the KZN South Coast from the skies with a flip in a helicopter, light aircraft or microlight. Experienced pilots from World of Wings, Airtrack Aviation and more are ready to make this a date to remember by taking guests over oceans, forests, waterfalls and towns. And, with the annual Sardine Run making a show during the winter months, there’s a chance of spotting whales, sharks, and a host of other marine creatures in action!

3.      Lake Eland Game Reserve

Combine adventure and nature with a date in the exquisite Lake Eland Game Reserve in Oribi Gorge. Set the mood with a picnic while taking in the local wildlife, enjoying a spot of couple’s fishing or going on a memorable game drive. Alternatively, get the heart racing with 4×4 excursion or some paint ball!

4.      KwaXolo Caves Adventures

This is one date that won’t be forgotten! Couples will be taken on a guided hike along the mountainside using a rope-and-rung system affixed to a rock face into the KwaXolo Caves, home to centuries-old San artwork. Views of the gorge and waterfall make for a romantic backdrop as a picnic is enjoyed following the excursion.

5.      ANEW Resort Ingeli Forest Lodge

What about a romantic retreat in the farmlands? Located in the farming town of Harding, below the captivating Ingeli Mountain and surrounded by indigenous forests, is this stunning lodge. There are spacious country rooms with great views for the overnight stay, as well as mountain trails for a romantic hike or bike ride. For those wanting something a bit different, there’s also quad biking mini-golf. Finish off with a drink at Forester’s Bar and a romantic dinner.

6.      Riverside Boat Cruise

Nothing says a romantic date quite like a riverside boat cruise! There are many such options along the KZN South Coast, such as from Port Edward’s Umtamvuna River Lodge. Enjoy a scenic journey sipping on cocktails and taking in the breathtaking views while cruising along on a luxury pontoon boat.

7.      Horse ride on the beach

And now for something truly different – a beachside horse ride for two! Selsdon Park Estate in Trafalgar offers couples this unique experience, catering to riders of all levels, from beginners through to equestrian experts. Discover the KZN South Coast on horseback by following trails that cut across farmlands, coastal forests and beautiful, sandy beaches.

8.      Snorkelling Safari

Local tour operators are ready to take couples out on a boat for an underwater date! The KZN South Coast is home to two Marine Protected Areas – Protea Banks and Aliwal Shoal – both of which are teeming with colourful fish, rays and other exciting marine life. This is particularly exciting in the winter months when Sardine Run gets underway! Fortunately, the subtropical climate means year-round swimming! For those who prefer to stay close to shore, there are many rock pools and great snorkelling opportunities along the many beaches – five of which have Blue Flag status.

9.      Sundowners

Whether looking to finish the day on a great note or get the date underway, then a sundowner at one of the KZN South Coast’s many popular spots is on the cards. There are some fantastic local eateries boasting great views to share a couple’s cocktail.

10.   Spas

Finally, for a date that promises relaxation and rejuvenation, then the KZN South Coast has a number of beautiful, nature-based spas. Get a couple’s massage or another pampering treatment at one of the many retreats and eco-sanctuaries found in this beautiful spot.

Ugu South Coast Tourism (USCT) is the official destination management organisation of the Ugu District Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), South Africa.
