Through Scottburgh winds the Mpambanyoni river. Meaning ‘where birds gather’ or sometimes ‘the confuser of birds,’ its name hints at the abundance of birdlife found along the river. On its south bank sits the TC Robertson Nature Reserve, which has wildlife including blue and grey duiker, monkeys, mongeese and beautiful butterflies. It’s a great spot for a family picnic! There are 12km of self-guided walking trails, winding their way through grasslands, wetlands, river and estuary systems, palmveld and thornveld, and in spring it is bursting with colour with the blooming of wildflowers in the area.
North of the Mahlongwa River and Scottburgh is Crocworld Conservation Centre. It creates an interactive experience with reptiles and birds through educational talks and demonstrations. There are a variety of crocodiles and snakes, as well as some farm animals! There is a play area for kids as well as a restaurant, making it an all-in-one family activity!
Further down the coast, and inland from the bustling beaches and coastal towns, lies Lake Eland Game Reserve, home to Africa’s longest and fastest zip line tour. If heights aren’t your thing, there are a variety of activities to do, including a 4×4 trail, horse riding trails, mountain biking, fishing, walking, paintball and more!
