In the spotlight – Pennington

Pennington is a small town in comparison to some of the other coastal hot spots, but it is also one of the most popular! Named after the Pennington family, who began farming in the area near the end of the 19th century, the area is still a prominent place for sugarcane and dairy farming. You’ll found yourself surrounded by both rural and coastal ecosystems, providing this quaint town with a unique and relaxing vibe.

Pennington may be small, but it is also home to the wonderful seaside towns and villages such as Kelso, Sezela, and Bazley Beach. With pristine beaches, beautiful bays, safe tidal pools, and lovely mild weather, it’s no wonder that this small and quiet precinct attracts thousands of visitors throughout the year.

Pennington is also brimming with history. It is home to the Botha House, which was built as a gift for Annie, the wife of General Louis Botha. The land was procured by Sir Frank Reynolds, a sugarcane entrepreneur, who also built the seaside residence for the prime minister to express his admiration. King George VI of Britain was planning to visit the estate shortly before he passed in 1952.

Pennington is home to the breath-taking Umdoni Park, a stunningly natural and protected sanctuary of over 200 hectares. The park hosts an indigenous coastal forest, and its name is taken from the Umdoni trees (water myrtle) peppered throughout the park. The park was established by Sir Frank with the aim of protecting the flora and fauna of the area. He presented it to the country in 1920 and this established the Umdoni Trust, which is still responsible for the preservation of the area’s natural beauty.

Pennington is home to many different bird species, small deer and duiker, as well as a variety of warm-water and migratory fish. This abundance of fish has resulted in a large fishing community, with trophy fish such as barracuda, Garrick, salmon, and various species of shark up for grabs. People also enjoy watching whales and dolphins right from their towels on the beach. The sea is a vital part of life for the locals, providing sustenance as well as entertainment. The lure of a seaside holiday makes sure that Pennington is a top destination for beach-goers and holidaymakers.

So whether you’re looking for a fun-filled family holiday, or a quiet romantic weekend away with that someone special, Pennington is sure to have everything you need to make your experience unforgettable. Once you’ve been, you’re sure to be back!
