Escape to Margate and Surrounds

Escape to Margate and Surrounds

The KZN South Coast is home to some beautiful oceanside vacation spots, but none as popular as Margate and its Surrounds. Including famous locations such as Uvongo, Ramsgate and Shelly Beach, this coastal stretch has loads to offer!

This stretch of the KZN South Coast is home to some of South Africa’s most popular beaches. They’re family and pet-friendly, so the whole family can enjoy the beach and the sea. You’ll find a mixture of locals and tourists soaking up the sun, swimming and surfing. These beaches offer the perfect opportunity for kayaking and canoeing, either on the lagoons or in the sea!

Margate and its surrounds are bursting with fun activities. Check out the Uvongo waterfall, or take a fishing charter from Shelly Beach. If you’re in the mood for some retail therapy, there are two large malls, Shelly Centre and South Coast Mall. Ramsgate’s Marine Ramble has a Whale Viewing Deck where you might catch a glimpse of whales and dolphins!

The Sebenza Village, which hosts a variety of rustic shops selling everything from organic produce to fashion to beauty, is a must see! There are a number of restaurants and cafes offering snacks, meals and refreshments. A children’s playpark, with some resident ducks and bunnies, makes this the perfect family outing.

While the KZN South Coast is a popular holiday destination, it has more than blue seas and sandy beaches. There is a budding art community, and The Riverbend Art Gallery exhibits work from some of South Africa’s top artists. You can browse paintings, drawings, pewter ware, ceramics and stone carvings. If you’re looking for another cultural experience, inland is the semi-rural village of Nyandezulu, where you can learn about the local culture, the Shembe Church and visit a sangoma (a traditional healer) and learn about the role they play within the community.

When those stomachs start rumbling, there are numerous restaurants, cafés and bar options to fill you up! Trattoria La Terrazza offers up delicious Italian food accompanied by the backdrop of the Umkobi Lagoon in Southbroom. Serving local handmade cheeses, delicious desserts and local and international wines, it’s the perfect spot for a romantic or family dinner. There are also some local institutions such as Tom, Dick and Harry’s, a traditional British pub trading for over 20 years, or the Lobster Pot, which has been serving up incredible seafood for over 50 years!

Accommodation down the KZN South Coast is varied and there truly is something for everyone! You’ll find a selection of hotels, AirBnb’s, self-catering apartments and units, as well as beach-side camping and caravanning! Whatever your needs and budget, you’re sure to find the perfect spot for you and the family!

With summer quickly approaching, make sure you visit the KZN South Coast! Come and check out what our backyard paradise has to offer!
